The centre piece of Padthaway Estate at Padthaway South Australia is the magnificent 1882 Victorian two-storey Limestone mansion. It is one of the most important colonial homesteads in Australia and features in Historic Homesteads of Australia, published by the Council of National Trusts in 1982. Padthaway Estate incorporates a winery and homestead which is set in the middle of 120 acres of manicured vineyard in the pristine Padthaway Wine Region on the Limestone Coast of South Australia.

Property History

Padthaway Estate has operated principally, as an important supplier of high grade fruit and a highly productive and versatile producer of premium wines with cellar-door-sales conducted within the original stone homestead stable complex. Padthaway Estate is characteristic of its provenance and has been well cared for by successive refurbishments preserving the Victorian colonial elegance and charm.

The vineyards are fully established with a total of 44,5 ha in the heart of the Limestone Coast wine region of South Australia processing high quality fruit into boutique wines. The wine museum is of freestone built of local stone in the 1850’s with most being below ground level as originally it was a cellar.

Architectural Features

Padthaway, is a large stately two-storey Victorian mansion built of local limestone in freestone with wide sweeping concave verandahs and elegant timeless symmetry. The homestead accommodation displays all the grandeur of the Victorian period and features large formal rooms downstairs and a majestic split-staircase serving six double bedrooms for guests on the upper level that also overlook the surrounding vineyards and beautiful parkland.

Padthaway, Aboriginal for Good Water is set in magnificent formal gardens surrounded by hedges that incorporate numerous rose gardens, dry stonewalls and towering red gums. The magnificent homestead exudes the ambience of a large and comfortable country house with a stately appearance. Padthaway Estate is an integral part with Lawsons 1847 stone cottage and the converted shearers quarters that function as an exclusive bed & breakfast and wedding destination.
